Because obviously they instigated this, because they wouldn't get "the camera out of his face", to paraphrase callers I heard on ESPN Radio this morning.

See, these people don't understand the media's role. Yes, they are times when the media gets too close. But in this case, they would have to be sticking a camera in Rogers' face at his house at 3 in the morning to justify Rogers' reaction.

However, these camera guys are DOING THEIR JOB. A lot of folks outside media don't realize this. I work in the field. Not a cameraman, mind you, but I'm in the field. These people don't realize that the cameraman's job is to put the lens on Rogers' if that's what their boss told them to do. Now, granted, the camera guy shouldn't get 2 inches away from him while doing so, but if the camera guy is supposed to be covering the Rangers, he's going to cover the Rangers.

Rogers can't tell him to leave, only the cameraguy's boss can. Now, my boy lugging the lens can't go right up in his face, but if he's simply shooting pre-game warmups at a respectable distance, then he's doing no wrong. When Rogers approaches the guy and gets in the camera guy's face, the fault lies in Rogers.

I'm sorry, but sometimes, you can not blame the media, as much as you would like to. Kenny's went off the chain here, and I hope he receives some sort of punishment for it, whether it handed down in-house by the Rangers or by MLB themselves, or possibly by the local authorities.

Sadly, they're taking my Mega Hits away

Yes, the dastardly folks at MTVN (that's MTV Networks for regular non-media types) are pulling the plug on VH1 Mega Hits. A shame really, considering that was probably the best place to see modern rock videos that were off the beaten path, as well as those classics from the 90s.

A little bit of background, mainly because I'm too lazy to go dig up the article and link it here. VH1MH is part of a digital package of channels offered up by MTVN. MTV Hits/Jams, VH1 Classic/Country/Soul, Nick Toons/GAS, are all part of this package. Most run commerical free, mainly running station promos as breaks. (Which always cracks me up because VH1 Country will run VH1 main promos that just look so out of place there.)

What will replace VH1MH largely depends on your location. MTVN's new channed aimed at the gay community, Logo, will take it place on the satellite, but that doesn't exactly mean your cable provider will use Logo to fill the space soon to be created in the channel lineup.

Either way, I tip some sort of beverage to your memory, VH1 Mega Hits. There will be soon one less reason to not watch Cinemax after Dark on my digital cable.

The VH1 Mega Hits Experience

So here's the setup: this is one of those all video channels that you may or may not have on your digital cable. It started out as an adult top 40 video channel, which means you might have had Dave Matthews Band followed by Eminem. Then one day, I noticed a LOT of alternative videos. So they've kept the Mega Hits moniker, while playing all alternative, from mainstream to not-so-mainstream. My guess for the lack of a name change: hey, we've got the bumpers already made, why spend money on a new logo? Anyways, for a writing exercise, I decided to watch an hour and do color commentary on the videos. So join me, as we watch VH1 Mega Hits.

Jet "Cold Hard..."
For some reason, the graphic does not mention the whole title of the song, which is "Cold Hard Bitch." Yet they say it in the song, not edited. Go fig. Someone must like these guys, every video they've had brought a hefty production budget with it. In the end, it's still Aussie rock and bad teeth. Speaking of bad teeth, what happened to the Darkness?

Low Millions "Eleanor"
I actually stumbled across this CD at B&N the other day. Not bad, but nothing earth-shattering. This vid consists of PARTYTIME with the band obviously used to random people stopping by their loft while they play the latest single of their new CD. For some reason, everyone has their Polaroid taken with Eleanor written in magic marker as an ID. Oh, I've looked up again, every random person is a hot chick. This happens all the time when bands practice, I'm sure. For the record, I prefer the track "Statue" from these guys' CD, Ex-Girlfriends.

RHCP "Under the Bridge"
All we need is Kennedy VJing, and I'd be back watching Alternative Nation in my teens. Classic video, as Anthony walks the streets, and we all remember what Flea looked like with hair. Of course, everyone remembers Kiedis doing the running man with his manly locks flowing in the wind. Hey, for a second, we had a LSU color scheme going with the lights! C'mon, c'mon, where's the running man....cheap special effects sequence with a car chase or something, AND THERE'S THE RUNNING MAN! I think the only point was to show him without a shirt. Honest.

Rage Against The Machine "Renegades of Funk"
One of favs from Rage, because it just rocks. Not a shock here the video is a political statement, because Rage was a political statement, in case that wasn't beaten into your head in EVERY song. Video kinda goes like a credit sequence with the best theme song ever, as you never see the band at all. You do see a recreation of the album's cover and lots of stock footage.

Promo for Strange Love: Brigette's a man, baby. Points for using Stellastar's My Coco as bed music for the promo.

Beck "E-Pro"
Now here's a fun video. Lots of special effects, using what looks like 80's vector video game graphics on speed. Moves like a cartoon, and I'd like to see this technique used for something on Adult Swim, rather than have time taken away from my life by more than two seconds of Tom Goes To The Mayor. Beck's head is in a washing machine, which now goes on to eat pizza in a lake, and then gets shot out of a cannon. Song's good. Ok, Beck's head is back on his head, and he's getting chased by..something, and escapes by running on musical notes. Heh, the notes run out when the song ends.

Bush "Everything Zen"
Ok, I've definitely noticed something from the videos from the Alternative Nation days. Must be blurry. Must be jumpy. Must have lots of smoke and bad lighting. May or may not have one thing to do with the song. (Example: STP's "Sex Type Thing".) Then again, a lot of these songs had great hooks, but not much meaning, which may have left the videos open to artisic interpretation. In Bush's case, this led to at least two videos which looked almost exactly the same, this one and "Little Things". Having one band member shirtless also apparently was peachy keen back then. Oh, the focus was completely optional too.

Velvet Revolver "Slither"
Speaking of STP, out comes Scott Weiland, with a band I'm amazed he hasn't tanked yet by some sort of illegal use of illegal substance. And man, does he look...aged. He's needs a good ham sammich too. Here's another underground party video, except this one you get to by apparently entering through a cave because you have to wear the splunking hat. Someone get Scott a belt, that's too much skin showing. Oh, yeah, I guess I have to mention Slash and that other guy from G'N'R are in this band, because they need money too. Slash still looks EXACTLY the same. I mean, I think he and Dick Clark both have access to the same never-aging elixir. And there's Scott doing the Jesus pose!

Promo: Surreal Life promo. X-Pac and Chyna NOT on PPV! Don't miss it because I will!

Jimmy Eat World "Pain"
Why are the kids from the Royal Tennebaums here? And why does this song not even hold a candle to the second single "Work"? Anyways, the guys are either playing outside, or it's a garage with a horrible mold problem. Our protagonist in this mini-epic we call a music video apparently feels that doing something akin to Jackass stunts will help him forget about his lady love, and I still can't figure out why there's a Tennebaum cameo, if that's what the kids are supposed to be. And in the end, the girl comes back, and we find out it WAS a garage after all with lots of grass.

The Breeders "Cannonball"
God, the Deal's were HOT in this video. Always thought that, always will. This is just a fun video, where you know the director was just, "Hell with it, let's wing it. Roll a ball down a street, stick your head in this water, and we'll roll some film of ya'll playing the song, put it together, then break for cold ones. ROLL!" Damn, this song still makes your foot tap along to it. If this were the IMDB, we'd have entries for seeing the crew in the mirrors, but since it's not, we won't. Now if you don't mind, I'm going to enjoy the rest of this reggae song. Back for the next video.

Phantom Planet "California"
Hey look the guy from Rushmore! He's not in the band anymore! And that's about the extent of my Phantom Planet knowledge. This here's your "band on the road on tour" formula video. SEE Phantom Planet play Wack-A-Mole! FEEL a band member putting on his pants! KNOW that another member reads books! WONDER why they feel the need to throw themselves across the stage in reckless abandon! SMELL a bathroom! (Well, not really.) And then Rushmore guy brushes his teeth and then washes his mouth out with whiskey. Might try that tomorrow instead of ACT flouride.

Promo: Stop AIDS, or a kid will have his ballons popped by a Pee-Wee Herman wannabe.

U2 "All Because of You"
This is almost like a sequel to that one video where they had to play on top of a building because of a near riot. No, I don't remember the song. Anyways, lots of adoring fans as the gentlemen play on the back of a truck. Can't tell if anyone listening to their special edition U2 iPod at the same time, tho. Man, some of these fans are responding like Michael Jackson fans, and that alwa...and it's EXACTLY at this point I realize I forgot to watch David Letterman tonight because Kathleen Edwards was on, and now I'm slightly annoyed. That girl needs to come down my way to play a show, I've only seen her live once, and that was on a multi bill in Philly. Oh look, video's over. On to....

Muse "Hysteria"
Hey, I interviewed these guys once when I worked in College Radio ages ago. Don't even remember what we talked about. Here's a another effects laden video, with lots o' lavish backdrops. Band keeps it simple by just playing the instruments, most of the action comes from the craziness around them. Always fun to just watch a band play. No need to put them in wacky situations, unless it's the Beastie Boys. If I bothered to look, I'm sure the imagery in the video matching Muse's latest CD release, therefore triggering a reaction to make it stand out as you cruise the racks at __________________ (insert your fav record store here).

Nickelback "Someday"
For some reason, I always change the first line of this song do "Why the hell I'd wind up with tits?" Then I can never think of anything else that fits. This one's easy: It's the nickel version of Ghost. He's dead, doesn't know it, why's she cryin', WHY WON'T SHE LISTEN TO ME I'M YELLING AND CAUSING A SCENE, whoops, massive wreck involving girl and truck, girl's spirit walks out, the two walk away, happily roaming the earth apparently in some sort of purgatory, forever denied the sweet nectar that flows from the angels' chalices. That, or there is no heaven. I'm not really sure that's the point of the video though. Oh, and the band plays in some vacant office space, because studio time is expensive.

Unwritten Law "Save Me"
Here's a video that uses the almighty power of computer animation. And for some reason, they used computers that apparently are from the Sega Saturn era, because it's rough, it's blocky, and the computer models have barely more detail than Interstate '76 (there's a dated reference). Video doesn't really help an average song. But we DO have Heaven in this video, apparently to soothe the theological turmoil set upon me by the last video.

And that's an hour of my life watching VH1 Mega Hits and having randomness spill out of my head. Fun though, have to do this again sometime.

See THIS is why I enjoy having a laptop with wirless internet. She said in its fall line-up, it "drifted to too much on the unscripted side".

This may just be the sign that the pendulum is swinging away from all these godawful reality shows that have nothing to do with reality. According to the article linked above, and another at ESPN dot com, a blue ribbon committee could soon be setting up bowl matchups. No shock there, basketball's done that for years during March Madness.

But the problem will always be that the bowls are a tradition that are trying to adapt to a playoff-minded public, and they're just not doing a good job.

That's not the bowl's fault, I think. In fact, I like the tradition that seeps through college football, and bowl games are a big part of that.

On the flip side, having SO MANY damned bowl games is diluting what the purpose of a bowl was: a reward for an amazing season, no matter who had it.

But nowadays, the sporting public has seen playoffs (whether it be a one and done or a series) determine who is the best for a championship. But college football still, in all honesty, doesn't let the teams truly decide who is number one. It's lets, in the end, something else.

It lets someone else.

The biggest problem with the BCS since day one has been humans. Let's face it: if the human can make the perfect formula to decide who's the best, then the computer should take it from there and then no one should complain. But that's what happened last year with LSU/Oklahoma/USC (and being a Tiger fan, I was quite happy with the results). It happened again with Utah and Texas this year. The problem is that no one will be happy because there's too much emotion involved.

I'm in favor for a playoff system, myself. I've heard the idea floated of using the bowl sites as playoff sites. That's a thought, but you then run the risk of outpricing a lot of fans with a lot of travel costs. You'd almost have to regionalize it a bit, kind of like college baseball and their playoff system of regionals and superregionals. That way would probably be fair, though for the life of me, I don't know how to start wrapping my head around that.

But wouldn't it attract more fans, especially from schools considered the underdog? Their fans' would have a little more to pull for, considering there's a chance your school could pull of the upset and move on to the possibility of greater things? Now, it's just an upset. Sounds like I'm slighting it, but imagine if your team not only gets an upset, but gets closer to a national championship?

The system now is trying to give a semi-playoff, with the matchup (hopefully) of 1 and 2 teams across the board: BCS, AP, Coaches. But it always ends up with someone on the outside looking in. Oklahoma and USC deserve a shot at a national title. And as much as it pains me to say it, so does Auburn. A playoff would give them a chance at that.

I think everyone would be happy then.

But then, no one's asking me for my college football thoughts.

Another e-mail post

This time to see if it will publish or not.

I can't just read one page.

So I went to megacorporatebookstore today. See, I've been helping someone move who has a ton of books, and it's given me the itch to pick up some random books, preferably ones that are on sale.

Scored another Calvin & Hobbes collection, along with some random (see a theme here?) information books.

So here's something that really interested me:

Synesthesia is a rare condition in which stimuli to one sense are perceived by other senses. Trees and weeds used to be my neighbors.

But someone has purchased the land, and is in the process of building condos on it.

So of course, the first thing that has to happen is clearing the land. So it was funny to have trees one day when I left for work; and then when I got home, have a big gaping hole.

Over the weekend, they finished with the last couple of trees that were left, and now the land has been completely cleared. So it's like someone built a skyline that I didn't have before.

I kind of miss the trees. But it's interesting to see things that have always been there, just at a different angle.

Wonder if I'll still be here to see what goes up next door now.

I never get THAT emotional.

Except tonight, apparently.

So on my long list of cable channels, up pops Big Fish. I had always wanted to see this movie, but I'm one of those that absolutely has to see it from the beginning. No starting in the middle for me. So catching it right from the start, and hearing my roommate tell me how good it is, I figure tonight is the night.

And what a great movie it is. Something I still enjoy, even into these adult years, is a good fairly tale. Something in me is not willing to give up on finding a good story. Something I hope I never lose, actually.

And what Big Fish is trying to find the line where truth and fantasy begin. Where you can tell a story, and tell the truth, but not.

And finding that that isn't a bad thing.

Anyways, it's probably best that I watched it by myself. Because when everything comes together...when the son GETS it....it took me a second to realize I was crying. Openly crying, sobbing, you name it.

Surprised me really. I can get caught up in movies, TV, whatnot. I can get emotional over characters but never like that.

It's an odd feeling where you're crying...but it's a jumble of emotions.

So that said, I highly recommend this one. And maybe you should keep some Kleenex handy.

Just in case.

When I can't sleep.

Best sight from the road trip to Tiny Pebble, AR and back: The "Mad Butcher" Store. Nothing makes me want a cut of meat more than the possibility the man doing the work could be the last person I want holding a sharp, pointy, deadly cutting instrument.

THOUGHT SHIFT

Why can I not get her out of my head? This has never happened before. I've never been so annoyed, never wanted nothing to do with someone and at the same time want her more than anything. STILL. Is this obsession? Is it love? Is it me just not knowing what the hell it is when it comes to her?

Annoyed not the right word. Not wanting to do anything is too strong. Like everything, I should be looking in the middle.

Happy medium.

THOUGHT SHIFT

I hate it when I just can't fall asleep.

THOUGHT SHIFT

On the other hand, we're getting a cool new toy at work.

So things aren't so bad. All comes out in the wash and all that.

Could use a new book to read though.

Doesn't matter. I waste too much time with my face in the internet. Not good. Too much of anything can be a problem.

Except love.

And pleasant weather.

Happy mediums. Happy mediums.

THOUGHT SHIFT

(And I keep hitting the wrong key and type it SHIGT each time)

I haven't fit in a medium in a loooooong time. How long before the XL isn't enough?

Hope never, really. Probably wouldn't hurt to eat a few more salads and tear myself away from the monitor for a little walking around.

THOUGHT SHIFT (did it again)

I live in a lousy town for a walk. It's not like I can just bop out for a jaunt and land anywhere. Not close to a coffeehouse or newsstand or bookstore. Don't really want to hang in a Circle K, you know.

I enjoy cities you can walk in. Something about it makes you AND the city feel a bit more alive.

Philly was like that...so was Chicago. The way you could just walk to the train and then walk to your destination gave it...a novelty maybe? Once the novelty wore off, would I find it just as interesting to drive somewhere?

You can walk in New Orleans. I have that if I want. But I don't have the urge to walk the Quarter. I've done it before. Not big enough. And every time I'm there, it's usually a tourist time. Hell, it's that year round.

Would I live in the Quarter? I dunno. It's quaint I guess.

If I did live somewhere, I'd like to have a balcony with a view of water.

"If I did live somewhere" That mean I'm not living NOW?

THOUGHT SHIFT

I really wish I could just go to sleep, y'know? Maybe I should lie down instead of typing.

Dammit, I just had to hit the next blog button, didn't I?

And after I did that, this came up at the end of the most recent post:

<quote>It is an exciting time to be alive, there is much to resist and much to stand against. Or Girl Fever, as it is also known. Made by the same guy who did 100 Girls, which I've also seen. And they're pretty much the same movie, really. And both are decent.

See what happens when I stay up late without a coherent thought? The rambling begins.

Whatever. Mind's off track now. About a billion different tangents are running through it at the moment and trying to pick just one is like trying to decide what to use your first dollar of a million on. So many choices, how to pick just one.

Hm. Never thought of it like that before. You have a million dollars, how do you spend the first one? After that one is gone, you have plenty remaining to spend. And I'm sure after someone wins a lottery or just plain earns the damn money, they probably all think about the big things they're going to do with the money. Vacation....set up trust fund for the kids, make sure they go to college....maybe a new car...maybe a Rolls...after all you have money.

Do you think any of the millionaires, once they had their money, put in a huge pile and looked at one dollar and said "What does this dollar go to?"

Does it limit your choices? Does it make your choices infinite?

I bet Uncle Scrooge NEVER had this problem. But then he swam in his money. Never could figure out how you dive into a big pile of gold coins and not just go "ow". But then, I'm not a really rich duck.

Donald was always my favorite character, in case you absolutely could not sleep tonight without knowing that.

Maybe you could make this whole dollar thing a little harder by adding the condition that whatever you spent it on, it could be no more than a dollar....no less too. And to really make it fun, that includes tax.

You could buy two 50 cent Cokes. That's about all I can think of at the moment.

What if that was a condition to your million? Can't have the rest until you spend this one dollar. And you can't just buy two Cokes.

Or would you never spend it, because you could never decide how to start? Or just start that small.

You have it. You can buy big things. But you have to start small.

When I get on something like this, I wonder if I'm the first one to think of it. Or is someone thinking the same thing at the same time.

Either is possible.

I really should just go look for directions to Little Rock.

So I just watched Secretary.

Now, normally if you were to tell me Maggie Gyllenhaal (and yes I did have to cut and paste her name) were in a movie that probably involved more spanking that your average day care or slightly adventurous CSI episode, chances are I would be in the first row with a large tub of popcorn and a megasized Diet Coke. Just to see how the plot goes, honestly.

Ok, bad jokes aside, when I heard about this movie and the glowing praise being showered upon it, I figured I needed to see it. So when I stumbled across it on channel 20230844 on my digital cable, I considered myself blessed by the programming scheduling gods.

Now after having seen the movie, I'm a little...disappointed.

Don't get me wrong, I like a good love story as much as the next guy comfortable in his sexuality. And that's all the movie is, a love story. Wrapped in quite a different wrapper that an usual love story.

But it wasn't all I thought it would be. The movie just sort of bounces around until the big turning point (and look, I'm trying to be real nice and not spoil anything, in the off chance that you hit the Blogger random button, landed here, and haven't seen the flick yet. I don't think I could live with the fact of ruining a total stranger's potential enjoyment of a movie. Really.) and then it picks up some momentum.

But I'm sitting there thinking "Am I going to really be thankful for staying up late to watch this?" By the end I felt...I don't know, rewarded the word I'm looking for here? The resolution was ok.

But many people will focus on the S&M aspect, which really wasn't as major as I thought it would be.

Aw hell, I don't know what I want to say about this movie. Maggie's in it, she looks JUST like an old girlfriend it's scary, and she does a bang up job. Spader's a little too much at times, but he nails it in the end. (Oh, god, I may or may not have just made a really bad pun. It was unintentional, I promise. In fact, that entire paragraph may have just been...I shouldn't try to do this when I'm fighting to stay awake, should I?)

I'd say go watch it. Decide for yourself. And you know the umpires didn't just walk up and say, "Gimme the Riot Police STAT!"

So that has me thinking: Is that group of cops at the ready at EVERY game like that? That was a fair number of cops in riot gear in very little time. Do they expect problems every game that they need to be at the ready? Or is it a response to 9/11?

Just curious, is all.

At this point, both Game 6 of the ALCS and Airplane! are on at the same time.
